His career spanned 6 decades and took him to countries across Europe, including England, Austria, Germany and Russia. It was in Russia that he owned and operated a large stud farm numbering 70 mares. However, during the Russian Revolution he was stripped of all his holdings and the family was forced to flee with only the clothes on their backs. They relocated for a time in England but eventually returned to the continent, settling finally in Budapest, where Joseph died in 1935. He was married first to Martha Wooten (1845-?) with whom he had three children, Jasper (1875-1948), John (1876-1953) and Ada (1879-1881). He then married Bertha Berger (1859-1951) with whom he had one daughter, Ada (1901-1980). According to his obituary he was buried at the "Evangelical Cemetery on Kerepeser St" in Budapest, Hungary.
