After a long illness from cancer, borne with unusual courage, there passed away in Shelburne District Hospital on September 17, 1970, a lifelong resident of Dufferin County in the person of Hazel Buchanan.

Born in Mono Township in 1898, Hazel was one of twin daughters born to Frederick Buchanan and Elizabeth Little. She lived a quiet life with her parents on the Centre Road, Mono, and at Elbe Corner until nine years ago, when she and her mother moved to Shelburne. She lived the last four years with her sister, Mrs. H. Elgie of Shelburne and worker three years in Shelburne District Hospital.

She was a member of the Primrose United Church UCW and Elba Women's Institute. Of a kindly nature, she will be sadly missed by her two sisters, Violet (Mrs. Herb Elgie) of Shelburne and bertha (Mrs. Frank Turner) of Camilla, and one brother, George of Shelburne; also seven nieces, five nephews, nine grandnieces and five grand-nephews.

Service was held from the Gamble Funeral Home on September 19th with Rev. J. W. Hofland officiating. The pallbearers were six nephews: Wallace and Allan Elgie, Doug and Alan Buchanan, John Turner and Arnold Erickson.

The flowerebearers were six nieces: Eveline Turner, Bessie Armstrong, Patsey Renick, Norma Horner, Florence Erickson and Lynn Buchanan.

Interment was made in the Shelburne Cemetery.

Buchanan- Hazel, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Buchanan and dear twin-sister of (Mrs. J. Elgie), Shelburne, and dear sister of Bertha (Mrs. F. Turner), Camilla and George of Shelburne. A quiet wedding was solemnized on the afternoon of Wednesday, Feb. 20th, a St. Paul's Rectory, Shelburne, when Miss Violet Buchanan, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Buchanan of Mono township, became the bride of Herbert Elgie, son of John Elgie of the same township. The Rev. W. H. Hartley officiated in the presence of a few relatives of the contracting parties. The bride was charmingly gowned in pale grey satin and wore a string of pearls, the gift of the groom. The young couple are members of St. James' church, Primrose, the bride being one of the members of the choir. They will reside on the groom's farm on Hurontario Street.

ELGIE, Violet: At Shelburne District Hospital on December 3, 1982 in her 85th year, Violet Buchanan, wife of the late Herbert Elgie and dear mother of Wallace and Allan; dear sister of Bertha (Mrs. Frank Turner) and George and predeceased by Hazel; also survived by 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at The Gamble Funeral Home, Shelburne on December 6th. Interment Shelburne Cemetery.

A very pretty wedding was solemnized at the home of the bride's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Buchanan, Primrose, on Wednesday, Dec. 13th, at high noon when their youngest daughter, Bertha Eveline, was united in marriage to W. Francis Turner, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. John Turner of Camilla, by the Rev. W. H. Hartley of Shelburne, under an arch of evergreens and in the presence of about a hundred relatives and friends. The bride entered the drawing room to the strains of Lohengrin's wedding march played by her cousin, Miss Rhoda Little of Shelburne, who was beautifully dressed in henna canton crepe. The bride was charmingly gowned in ivory duchess satin and radium lace and tulle veil and wore the gift of the groom, a beautiful wrist watch, and carried a bouquet of carnations and ophelia roses. Miss A. Bertha McGillivary of St. Thomas, cousin of the bride, was bridesmaid and wore robin egg blue satin and cream radium lace. The groom was supported by his cousin, Clifford Christian. During the signing of the register Miss Mabel Elgie sang very sweetly "Answer." After the ceremony all sat down to a sumptuous wedding dinner. The groom's gift to the bridesmaid was an onyx and pearl ring, to the pianist and soloist pearl bar pins and to the groomsman a gold watch chain. The happy couple left from Orangeville amid showers of good wishes and confetti for Toronto and points east. On their return they will reside on the groom's farm near Camilla.

Bertha Eveline Buchanan March 29, 1901 - Sept. 5, 1993.
Bertha Eveline Buchanan was born on a farm on the Centre Road and 25th Sideroad in Mono Township to Fred and Elizabeth Ann Buchanan on March 29, 1901.

She attended Granger Public School and Glens Public School. She taught piano as her profession and accompanied her brother George when he entertained at social events.

On Dec. 13, 1922 she married Frank Turner at her home on the Centre Road and moved to the Turner farm at 15 Sideroad and the Blind Line in Mono.

Bertha and Frank lived there together for 64 years. They had four daughters, Eveline, Iris, Bess and Flo and one son John. Frank and Bertha played in an orchestra for social events during their early years at Camilla and Primrose.

Bertha was a member of St. Andrew's United Church at Camilla where she played the organ for 20 years. She also taught Sunday School and was an active member of the UCW serving as president for a time.

Bertha will be remembered for her great sense of humor and good cooking.

She was "mother" and "grandmother" to many people who passed through her life.

Bertha was predeceased by her husband Frank, daughter Bess and son Dr. John, two sisters Violet and Hazel. She is survived by her daughters Eveline, Iris and Flo, daughter-in-law Betty Ann, one brother George and his wife Elva, many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and many friends.

Family & friends were saddened to hear of the sudden passing of George Fredrick Buchanan at Dufferin Oaks on December 11, 2003. George was born August 17, 1913. The youngest child & only son of Fredrick Buchanan & Elizabeth Little. George was born & spent all his life in Dufferin County, farming the family farm & later living in both Shelburne & Orangeville. A born entertainer, George sang at house parties & concerts accompanied by his sister Bertha. As an adult he played banjo with the Alvin Dermott orchestra playing for community parties, showers and barn dances. In 1925 he met Elva Lindsay and they were married in 1936. George & Elva raised five children. Patricia Rennick (deceased) Norma Horner, Douglas & his wife Linda, Alan this wife Barbara and Lynne and her husband Bob Glazin. Survived by seven grandchildren & 11 great-grandchildren. George was predeceased by his wife Elva and daughter Patricia, sisters Hazel Buchanan, Violet Elgie & Bertha Turner. Pallbearers were sons-in-law Bob Glazin, grandsons Phil Horner, Scott & Dean Buchanan, grandson-in-law Garry Shortt and friend Murray Halbert. A kind and devoted husband, father & grandfather & a loyal friend to many. Dad we miss you.

Peacefully at Dufferin Oaks On Thursday December 11,2003 in his 91st year. Loving husband of the late Elva Lindsay. Beloved father of Patricia Rennick (deceased), Norma Horner of Shelburne, Douglas of Mono Mills, Alan of Caledon and Lynne Glazin of Vancouver. Devoted grandfather of 7 seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The family received friends at the Doney Funeral Home, Shelburne, on Friday, December 12,2003. Funeral services were held on Saturday, December 13th 2003 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Private interment service followed. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family.
