George Aldon LittleBorn 4 Mar 1902 Dufferin County, Mono, Ontario, Canada, died 26 Sep 1928 Good Samaritan Hospital, Sandusky, Ohio, 26 years, buried 30 Sep 1928 Shelburne Cemetery Shelburne Free Press - October 4, 1928 - GEORGE ALDON LITTLE: Shelburne and vicinity extended their sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Little in the sad loss sustained in the death of the eldest member of their family, George Aldon, aged 26 years and 6 months, who passed the harbor of "Home Sweet Home" on Wednesday, Sept 26th, 1928. Aldon followed the life of a sailor and was of a quiet, retiring disposition and made many friends wherever he went. His first sail was in 1923 down the River St. Lawrence. In 1924 he sailed the Great Lakes with the Canadian Steam Ship Co. In 1925,26,27,28 he sailed with an American company on the steamer "J H Sheadle" as a wheelman, and encountered the big lee blockade. He sailed to England in the winter of 1926. Needing a rest this year he came home and after a time visited friends at Owen Sound, Barrie and Lansing, leaving there in time to join in the Little family reunion at Erin, where some 200 friends spent the day. On August 22nd he returned to the work for which his heart craved. He took ill on Sept 15th and became so ill that the boat pulled into Port Huron on Sept 21 and he was taken to the Good Samaritan Hospital at Sandusky Ohio. In response to a telegram his parents left Shelburne immediately by motor arriving at his bed-side at 6:30 am Sept 22nd. The same day a change came and he seemed to be on the way to recovery. Mr. and Mrs. Little arrived home on the afternoon of the 25th at 4 o'clock, only to receive a message on the morning of the 26th that he was not so well. They started away again only to receive a message before they got there that he had passed away. They have nothing but words of praise for the kindnesses extended the deceased and themselves by those in connection with the Sandusky Hospital. The remains were brought to Shelburne by train Friday morning Sept 29th. The funeral took place to Shelburne Cemetery, Saturday afternoon. A private service at the house at 2:30 o'clock was followed by a public service in St Paul's Anglican Church, the rector Rev. R. P. D. Hurford, taking as his text 1 Corinthians 12-12. The pallbearers were five cousins - Earl Shaw, Clifford Little, Stanley Summerfield, Harvey Little, Lindsay Little, and Arthur Hicks. Deceased is survived by his parents, three sisters and one brother: Mrs. Harold Watson (Rhoda), Lansing; Muriel, Kathleen and Walter, at home. Shelburne Free Press & Economist, July 1, 1953, page 8 25TH ANNIVERSARY Friday, June 26th, 1953, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Watson played host and hostess to a hundred or so of their relatives in the Legion Hall, Shelburne. The occasion was their Silver Wedding Anniversary. Rhoda Little and Harold Watson were married June 1928, in St. Paul's Church, Shelburne. Dr. R. P. D. Hurford, the then rector, had a busy time that day, as he united in wedlock two of his choir girls - Beatrice Jelly and Rhoda Little. The Silver Anniversary was a happy affair. The program consisted of solos, duet, recitations and speeches, all of a happy free nature, followed by an address, wishing the happy couple might reach their Golden Wedding Anniversary, as did Rhoda's parents and her grandparents. Numerous and beautiful were the gifts, testifying to the love that existed and the esteemed value of the happy couple. There was good music throughout the entire evening, ending in dancing where young and old (from 81 years to 13 years) danced the light fantastic. Folk were present from Brampton, Toronto, Bronte, Churchill, Barrie, Owen Sound, Woodstock and Coldwater. Although unwell for two years, he had conducted his business and was his same witty, jovial self until the day he took suddenly very ill. While Walter was very young the family moved from the farm to Shelburne where he attended both public and high schools. All of his life Walter was enthusiastic and active in everything he undertook - at Sunday School, Boy Scouts and Rotary Club. His pioneering spirit lives on in his subdivision to the north of town as well as his Amaranth Peat enterprise. After his marriage to Gracie Buchanan, Walter took up the trade of butchering in Singhampton, then Manitoulin Island. He also worked in the nickel mines in Sudbury and Falconbridge. In 1942 he returned to Shelburne, bought the R.B. Smith butcher business and built the first frozen food lockers in town. He is survived by his wife Gracie and six children: Reginald, Shelburne; Mary Jane (Mrs. M. Hunter), Toronto; Barbara Ann (Mrs. H. Fink), California; Betty Marie, Toronto; Susan and Joe, at home; also three sisters: Rhoda (Mrs. H. Watson) of Shelburne; Muriel of Woodstock and Kathleen (Mrs. N. Smith), Barrie. A brother Aldon predeceased him in 1928 and his parents Joseph G. and Adeline (Shaw) in 1967. The funeral, held from the Gamble Funeral Home, on May 27, was largely attended by friends and relatives from far and near. His Rector, Rev. J. W. Hofland, assisted by former rector, Rev. J. M. Dobson, spoke highly of Walter's dedication, faith and courage. He quoted as a tribute, the entire hymn: Fight the good fight with all thy might Christ is thy strength, and Christ thy might Lay hold on life, and it shall be Thy joy and crown eternally. Pallbearers were George Firth, George Little, Hugh Reid, Ralph Tomlinson, Harry Shaw and Tuck Berry. Six members of Shelburne Boy Scouts formed a guard of honour.
