Shelburne Free Press & Economist - June 10, 1969: Obituary
Shelburne mourns the untimely death of one of her sons, in the person of Walter Earnest Little, who passed away on May 24th, 1969, in Sunnybrook Hospital in his 58th year. Although unwell for two years, he had conducted his business and was his same witty, jovial self until the day he took suddenly very ill.

While Walter was very young the family moved from the farm to Shelburne where he attended both public and high schools. All of his life Walter was enthusiastic and active in everything he undertook - at Sunday School, Boy Scouts and Rotary Club. His pioneering spirit lives on in his subdivision to the north of town as well as his Amaranth Peat enterprise.

After his marriage to Gracie Buchanan, Walter took up the trade of butchering in Singhampton, then Manitoulin Island. He also worked in the nickel mines in Sudbury and Falconbridge.

In 1942 he returned to Shelburne, bought the R.B. Smith butcher business and built the first frozen food lockers in town.

He is survived by his wife Gracie and six children: Reginald, Shelburne; Mary Jane (Mrs. M. Hunter), Toronto; Barbara Ann (Mrs. H. Fink), California; Betty Marie, Toronto; Susan and Joe, at home; also three sisters: Rhoda (Mrs. H. Watson) of Shelburne; Muriel of Woodstock and Kathleen (Mrs. N. Smith), Barrie. A brother Aldon predeceased him in 1928 and his parents Joseph G. and Adeline (Shaw) in 1967.

The funeral, held from the Gamble Funeral Home, on May 27, was largely attended by friends and relatives from far and near. His Rector, Rev. J. W. Hofland, assisted by former rector, Rev. J. M. Dobson, spoke highly of Walter's dedication, faith and courage. He quoted as a tribute, the entire hymn:

Fight the good fight with all thy might
Christ is thy strength, and Christ thy might
Lay hold on life, and it shall be
Thy joy and crown eternally.

Pallbearers were George Firth, George Little, Hugh Reid, Ralph Tomlinson, Harry Shaw and Tuck Berry.

Six members of Shelburne Boy Scouts formed a guard of honour.

Flower bearers were Fred Ionson, Bob Buchanan, Denny Shaw, William Warnock, Howitt Deverell and Stanley Summerfield.

Interment was in Shelburne Cemetery.
