Evert Ralph Maharg

Evert the son of Ralph L. Maharg and Georgene E. Maharg of Flint MI enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 4 1966 in Detroit MI. In Vietnam he was assigned to and serving with Company B, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
During the second half of April the Battalion moved its CP (Command Post) to northern Quang Tri Province and began to participate in Operation PRAIRIE IV. In the early morning hours of April 26 while in their defensive perimeter southwest of Hill 886 South the Marines were hit with a barrage of NVA mortar and possible direct RPG (Rocket Propelled Grenade) Fire. Supporting arms were requested on the suspected enemy positions. After the attack, the Marines proceed on their mission, and made contact with enemy engaging them in fire fights several times during the day during the search in the mountains of Huong Hoa District. Towards evening, Company B linked up with Company K, 3d Battalion, 9th Marines northeast of Hill 861 South and were moving toward their night perimeters when a barrage of NVA mortar fire hit the Marines. During the days confrontations with the enemy nine men of Company B were killed in action, three by enemy mortar fire and several were wounded. PFC Maharg was one of the casualties, he was killed in action from hostile rifle fire. PFC Maharg was one of the casualties he was killed in action as a result of hostile gun shot wounds.
