Jephtha Douglas Stewart was born on 2 September 1890 in Denton, Carter Co., Kentucky, son of Greenville Stewart and Sarah Jane Hewlett. He was married on 10 February 1914 to Eva Mahala Cline who was born on 29 September 1890 in Sheepskin, Elliott County, Kentucky, daughter of Stephen Douglas Cline and Oleva Ann (Olivia Anna) Clay.

Jephtha was an assistant post master in Denton, Carter Co., Kentucky, when he registered for the draft in 1917. He was described as tall and slender with blue eyes, brown hair, and “not physically strong”. He died from tuberculosis on 3 May 1918 in Denton and was buried in Rice-Queen Cemetery at Denton survived by his wife and son, Vernon C. Stewart.

Jeptha married Eva Mahala Cline on 10 Feb 1914.
