Leslie H. Cowles Sr. 84, of 144 Putnam St., Oakfield, died Monday, Sept. 28, 1992, at his home.
He was born Dec. 26, 1907, in Oakfield, a son of Frank L. and Jennie Ripley Cowles. On Dec. 24, 1929, he married Margaret Bird at South Byron.
Mr. Cowles was a graduate of Oakfield High School. He attended the School of Engineering at Marquette University. Mr. Cowles assumed his insurance business in Oakfield in 1931, and retired from it in 1984.
He was a member of the Oakfield Fire Department, serving as chief for over 21 years. He was a member of Oakfield Senior Citizens, Oakfield Conservation Club, Lions of Oakfield, Masonic Lodge 126 of Oakfield, Fond du Lac Rifle and Pistol Club, American Association of Retired Persons, United Commercial Travelers, National Rifle Association, Professional Insurance Association, and Oakfield United Methodist Church.
He serve on the Oakfield School Board for 30 years and was a member of the Avoca Cemetery Association Board of Directors.
Survivors include one son, Leslie H. Jr. and his wife Kathie of Fond du Lac; one daughter, Sydney M. Henke and her husband Tom of Oakfield; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Margaret, on July 24, 1992; his parents; and one sister, Grace Cowles Backhaus.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oakfield United Methodist Church. The Rev. Joyce Rinehart will officiate. Burial will be at Avoca Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kohls Funeral Home, Waupun, and from 12:30 p.m. Thursday to the time of services at the church.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial in his name will be established.
