Ethel Marie Kintzler Bird, 94, of 1134 W. Westfield St., Oshkosh, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998.

She was born Nov. 16, 1903, in Fond du Lac, the daughter of Henry and Mary Dion Kintzler.

After graduating from Fond du Lac public schools, she graduated from Fond du Lac County Normal School and became a teacher at South Byron Grade School.

On Sept. 19. 1923, she married Bennett S. Bird of South Byron.

The couple farmed and lived in the Oakfield area until 1990 when they moved to Evergreen Manor Retirement Community in Oshkosh. The Birds would have celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary on Sept. 19, 1998.

Mrs. Bird was very active in community and church affairs. Among her many achievements was being the co-founder of the South Byron 4-H Club and the Fond du Lac Homemakers organization where she served terms as president.

She was instrumental in the development of the position and hiring of the first Fond du Lac County home agent.

Throughout her life she was active in religious organizations and served as president of South Byron Methodist Women's Society and served on the board of directors of Methodist Church's Byron Center.

As a historian, Mrs. Bird wrote histories of Byron Center Campgrounds, the South Byron Grange, and the South Byron Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Bennett; two sons, Robert C (Beverly) Bird of Fond du Lac, and Stanley E (Kathleen) Bird of New Brighton, Minn.; two daughters, Jeanne (Arthur) Culver of LaPloma, Calif., and Ruth Ellen (Stephen) Scholly of Glenview, Ill.; two sisters, Vivian Wurtzel of Seymour, and Marjorie Grogan of Mountain Home, Ark.; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great –grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Allan and four brothers,

Services: Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lomira. The Rev. Thomas Morgan will officiate. Burial will be at Avoca Cemetery in Oakfield.

Visitation: From 11:30 a.m. to the time of services Sunday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Red Cross, Trinity United Methodist Church, o Evergreen Retirement Community.

Kietzer Funeral Home of Lomira is assisting the family.
