Jeffery A. Stevens. a Coast Guard veteran, Eagle Scout, boatbuilder, musician, and a man known for warmth and courage, died on Dec. 24 at home in Montauk. With him were his wife, Jeanne, daughters Jessica and Olivia, son Jayme, sister, Sue Nagy, niece, Kirsta Nagy, and dog, Luke. The cause of death was colon cancer.

He was born in Toledo, Ohio, on Sept. 13, 1951, a son of Robert T. Stevens and the former Betty D. Sterling, both of whom died before him. In 1969, he graduated from Anthony Wayne High School in Whitehouse, Ohio. He was active in the Boy Scout troop there, and became an Eagle Scout in 1965.

After high school, Mr. Stevens went on to Bowling Green State University in Ohio, where he spent two years and was a member of the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity. He joined the Coast Guard in 1970 and was stationed in Montauk, where he was also a member of the honor guard. He left the Coast Guard after four years and founded a business on Industrial Road in Montauk that specialized in the building and repair of fiberglass boats.

Music was a big part of Mr. Stevens's life. He played guitar in several bands while growing up, and in Montauk was a founding member of the popular Frank Brothers Band.

In addition to his wife, sister, son, and daughters, Mr. Stevens is survived by his brother, Thomas Stevens of Ohio.

A service was held at St. Therese of Lisieux Catholic Church in Montauk last Thursday, and Mr. Stevens was buried at Fort Hill Cemetery the following day. Memorial contributions have been suggested to the Montauk Fire Department, 12 Flamingo Avenue, Montauk 11954, and/or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 909, New York, N.Y. 10101-0909.
