General Notes:
Margaret HAMMOND Obituary HAMMOND, Margaret Phyllis December 29, 1916 December 23, 2011 Phyllis peacefully passed away in Victoria BC, six days before her 95th birthday. She was born in Scott, Saskatchewan, the second of five children born to Milton and Mabel Tinline. Her father moved the family to Brandon, Manitoba, where he worked as Superintendent of the federal government Experimental Farm. Phyllis grew up on the Farm with her sisters Betty, Dorothy and Joyce, and brother John. As a young woman, after her schooling and secretarial training, she worked as a stenographer in the Farm office. After WWII she married a young air force officer in 1948. Joseph Charles Hammond (Joe), born in Revelstoke, BC returned with Phyllis to live in Rossland, BC. He was employed with the provincial Department of Highways, and the first of five children, Mary Elizabeth Ellen (Betty) was born soon after. Within a year they were transferred to Nanaimo, BC, still with the Highways Department, and soon Carolyn Joyce and Joseph John (Joe) were born. Three years later another transfer brought them to Victoria, BC, where Patricia Margaret (Patti) and Gail Kathleen were born. As a dedicated and loving mother, Phyllis took an active role in nurturing her children to become educated and responsible adults. In the spirit of community service, Phyllis volunteered her time at a local nursery school during the week and taught Sunday school at St. Alban's Anglican Church. She also volunteered at the Salvation Army thrift store, which evolved into full-time employment. Reading was a life-long interest, as well as daily solitaire and double solitaire games, crossword puzzles and crib games. Everyone greatly enjoyed her delicious pies, cookies and tarts. Throughout her life, Phyllis loved to knit, crochet and sew many lovely items. She was predeceased by her husband Joe in 2003, sister Betty (1941), brother John (1944), and parents Milton (1968) and Mabel (1949). She is survived by her sisters Dorothy Tinline and Joyce Dryden and her children Betty (Don), Carolyn (Ken), Joe (Dianne), Patti and Gail. Her grandchildren Jana, Megan, Caitlin, Micah and Keely will dearly miss their sweet and kind Grandma. Her great grandchildren Alora and Renin fondly remember their ferryboat Grandma". Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Merali and Irene for their dedicated and kind care of our mother over the years. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association. By request, there will be no service. 645437
