Shelburne Free Press & Economist - February 11, 1948, JAMES SERVICE:
James Service, a highly respected resident of the community, passed away at his home in Melancthon township, on Saturday evening, Jan. 31st, after a very short illness of only a few hours, in his 75th year. The former James Service was the third eldest son of James Service and Susan McMurdy. Mr. Service had resided on his farm, lot 23, con. 4, O.S., Melancthon township, for over forty-five years. On July 23rd, 1895, he was united in marriage to Sarah Dermott, who survives with three sons, William, of Fergus, Harry, in Melancthon township, and Earl, of Mount Forest; also two brothers, Robert, of Toronto, and William, of Creemore, and two sisters and one brother predeceased him: Mrs. W. Mumford, of Creemore, and Mrs. W. Rusk, of Toronto, also one brother, Thomas, of Beeton. The late Mr. Service had farmed for over forty-five years and also built many concrete bridges for his own township.

The funeral service was held from the Gamble Funeral Home, Shelburne, on Tuesday, Feb. 3rd, and was followed by interment in the Mortuary of Shelburne Cemetery. Mr. Andrew Blair and Mrs. Fredrick Bryanton conducted the service at the Funeral Home, and Mr. Albert Moore, at the Mortuary. The pallbearers were composed of relatives, old friends, and neighbors; Ivan Kidd, Eric Emerson, Murray McLelland, Frank Shaw, Samuel Dermott (brother of Mrs. Service), and Herb McCague (a nephew). The flower bearers were Delmer Service, Eldon Service (grandsons), Harry Dermott (nephew), Alfred Jamieson, and Geoffrey Spindler. Friends were present from Barrie, Beeton, Alliston, Georgetown, Durham, Toronto, Hanover, Belwood, Minesing, Fergus, Mount Forest, Brampton, Clarkson, Singhampton, Collingwood, Stayner and Orangeville.
