Shelburne Free Press & Economist, June 25, 1975 - Page 7 - MRS. J. A. FINES:
On Saturday, June 14, 1975, Violet Mae McCague, widow of the late John Alfred Fines, died at Shelburne District Hospital as the result of a fall the previous week. Mrs. Fines was in her 80th year. She was a devoted mother who never missed an opportunity to help anyone in need, and one of her favorite pastimes was working with her flowers.

The deceased was born near Relessey in Mono Township, November 5, 1895, to the late William Joseph McCague and Margaret Jane Dermott. On July 1st, 1914, she married John Alfred Fines and moved to Lot 27, 1st Line, Mono, where she resided until April 1947, when she and her husband retired to Owen Sound Street, Shelburne. Her husband predeceased her on May 20th, 1968.

She leaves to mourn her loss two daughters, Meretta (Mrs. Harold Rutledge) of Shelburne, and Blanche (Mrs. Ross Avison) of Rosemont; and four grandchildren, Sheilda (Mrs. Gordon Cave), Lawrie and Sharon Rutledge, and Gerald Avison; and two great-grandchildren, Brian and Karen Cave; and two sisters, Etta (Mrs. Arthur Kirkpatrick) and Zella (Mrs. Harry Service). Four sisters and two brothers predeceased her - Phoebe (Mrs. Wm. Fleming), Annie (Mrs. George Newton), Velma (Mrs. Roy McRitchie), Reta (Mrs. Edwin Whitten), Andrew and Herbert.

Mrs. Fines was a member of Primrose and Trinity United Church, Shelburne, and was always active in church work. She took a great interest in Elba, and later Shelburne, Women's Institute.

Rev. Bruce Besley conducted the funeral service Tuesday, June 17th, from the Gamble Funeral Home. A favourite hymn of hers was sung, 'In the Garden'.

The pallbearers were three grandsons, Lawrie Rutledge, Gerald Avison, Gordon Cave, and three nephews, Ralph Fines, Maurice Newton and Eric Kirkpatrick.

A large number of lovely floral tributes and memorial donations expressed the sorrow and sympathy of her many friends, and were carried by grandchildren, Sheilda Cave, Sharon Rutledge, Judy Avison, Brian Cave, and friends Dianne Penny and Jean Smith.

Interment was made in Shelburne Cemetery.
