Shelburne Free Press and Economist Date: 26 Oct 1939 Shelburne Free Press & Economist, October 26, 1939 - WILLIAM JOSEPH McCAGUE: There passed peacefully away on Wednesday, October 18th, 1939, at the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Harry Service, Redickville, Ont., an old and respected resident of Mono Township in the person of William Joseph McCague, in his 85th year. Deceased was the youngest and last surviving member of his family. He was born in Markham Township, near Richmond Hill. At the age of 12 years he moved with his parents to the Township of Mono, settling near Relessey. Here he resided until the death of his wife, whose maiden name was Margaret Jane Dermott. She predeceased him eleven years ago. Since then he has made his home with his family. Mr. McCague was a man of few words, having a quiet, peaceable disposition, very much devoted to his home and family. He had been bedfast, only one day, although when a young man he patiently bore ill health for a number of years, but in later life his health greatly improved, except for occasional heart attacks which his demise was attributed to. Just two years ago he was able to enjoy a trip to Western Canada, accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. J. A. Fines. His passing is mourned by two sons, Andrew, of Beeton, and Herbert, of Shelburne, and seven daughters, Mrs. W. J. Fleming, formerly of Shelburne; Mrs. W. G. Newton, Violet Hill; Mrs. Arthur Kirkpatrick, Whitfield; Mrs. J. A. Fines, Granger; Mrs. Roy Ritchie, Hanover; Mrs. Harry Service, Redickville, and Mrs. Edwin Whitten, Crombie; also eighteen grandchildren. The funeral, which was quite largely attended, was held to Shelburne Cemetery on Friday, Oct. 20th. The service at the house and graveside was conducted by Mr. Thomas Watterson, and the remains were borne to their last resting place by his six surviving sons-in-law, Messrs. W. G. Newton, J. A. Fines, Arthur Kirkpatrick, Harry Service, Ray McRitchie and Edwin Whitten. The floral tributes bore silent testimony to the esteem in which the departed was held. The family were all present at the funeral of their father except Mrs. W. J. Fleming, who is visiting in the Western Provinces, where telegraph communications failed to locate her
